The Utroms are an alien race that are featured in the Mirage series of comics and the current (2003-present) cartoon.
A group of the Utroms crashed on Earth about 20 years ago. It was during their attempt to rebuild their transmat machine in
order to return home that they lost a cannister of the mutagen that eventually transformed the turtles. This mutagen evolved
whatever touched it and made it more intelligent. This mutagen affected the four turtles, Splinter, and Leatherhead. The new
Mirage comic book series (Volume four) also tackles the issue of a possible spill of mutagen in Africa and the affect it had
on the creatures there. The Utroms were the inspiration behind the look that Krang was given in the original cartoon. Although
they look similar, the Utroms are an alien species, not a brain like Krang was.
